One of the most useful methods in this case, is the study of Digital Elevation Models (DEM) of gravel beds using Kinect device. In this regard, observations were made on artificial beds on a laboratory scale. Subsequently, the application of this method in determining the gravel bed of the Kordan River, as one of the rivers in the dry and semi-arid climate of the central regions of Iran, under the sunlight, Evaluated. Studies have shown that the ability of this device to build a digital model depends on the color, size, and material. It was also observed that this device is capable of accurately estimating relative differences of less than 20 and 40% in beds with regular and irregular geometric shapes of a digital model. However, the results from the use of this device in field studies indicate the high effect of infrared radiation in the environment and the negative effect of shadow in the space between aggregates, which challenges the use of this device in field studies. Specifically, studies have shown that by creating a shadow in field studies, the number of cloud points constructed at the sample surface has been increased from about 335,000 points to around 425,000 points, which represents a 26 percent improvement. Therefore, in order to eliminate this problem and apply the Kinect device in dry and semi-arid climates such as the Kordan River, it is recommended that field observations be made using a dark room or under cloudy-rainy weather conditions.
